Welcome to Northeastern University's graduate program in journalism. Boston is a wonderful city and great media and university town. Our master of arts program encourages you to take full advantage of the location and work closely with a first-rate faculty of scholars and professionals.

Members of our faculty average 10 years of professional experience in print, broadcast and online journalism, and have worked for news organizations such as U.S. News and World Report, the Wall Street Journal, the Hartford Courant and CNN. Our students also have access to some of the best working journalists in Boston as instructors on our part-time faculty.

In the Professional Track, our combination of hands-on training and work experience prepares graduates for careers as reporters and editors at newspapers, magazines and online publications, as well as reporters and producers at radio and television stations. Our extensive professional contacts through both internships and cooperative education programs ensure that students have a unique opportunity for practical experiences while they're in the program.

The Research Track is designed for those with significant professional journalism experience who wish to prepare for careers as journalism educators or want to do writing and research in a specialized field. Research Track students concentrate on a field of study by taking courses in their chosen area outside the School of Journalism and by writing a masters thesis on that topic.

Before coming to Northeastern, I had worked for years at news organizations large and small all across the country, the last 12 as a member of the editorial board of the Los Angeles Times. I often tell friends and colleagues that Northeastern's graduate program would have been the perfect preparation for the career that I actually had.

We hope you will want to learn more about the program for yourselves. Check out the rest of our web site and please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.

Best Wishes,
Stephen D. Burgard, Director
